Artist Of The Week: Fauxliage

Fauxliage is the first full length collaboration between former Sixpence None the Richer singer, Leigh Nash, and Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber of Canadian ambient pop outfit Delerium.

Nash's voice will be instantly recognizable to Delerium fans, having sung on their hit single “Innocente (Falling In Love)” from the album Poem and contributed two songs, “Run For It” and “Orbit of Me” to the band's subsequent Chimera.

Fauxliage was recorded in Vancouver while Nash contributed ideas and vocals from her home in Nashville, and also features multi-instrumentalist Roy Salmond, bassist Leah Randi and Sarah McLachlan drummer Ash Sood.

“It was a project created to always have female singers,” says Bill Leeb. “And Leigh has always been a personal favorite of mine.”

The fusion of Nash's evocative vocal style, which harks back to classic country heroines Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, and Leeb and Fulber's organically created electronic soundscapes, isn't an obvious one but somehow fits perfectly.

“The first time I wrote for a Delerium track (Innocente) I was very nervous and intimidated,” says Nash. “I had never done anything like that before with this kind of music. I found it to be such an enjoyable challenge.”

Opening with the upfront pop and restless hooks of “All the World” and “Someday The Wind”, Nash gives the album it's emotional depth, from the celestial harmonies of “Draw My Life” to the simmering anger of “All Alone”.

Nash's lyrics touch on universal themes of love and loss but often have a basis in personal experience, most notably “Rafe” the first single to be taken from the album. “Rafe is about my cousin who was very ill at the time and needed comfort,” she explains. “He used to be a very successful ballet dancer, that's why there are references to him dancing under light. The song was written to be a hand for him to hold in what I thought might be his last moments. Thankfully he is now doing well.”

Leeb and Fulber also conjure the ornate, almost baroque instrumental “Magic” and the lush lounge-influenced “Vibing” with it's Rhodes piano recalling the classically constructed ambience of William Orbit. Yet despite Fauxliage's unabashed pop stylings the album still retains a melancholic if seductive air.

“Music always reflects the artist's state of mind otherwise it's not realistic,” says Leeb. “At this particular moment in my life I am feeling very introspective and this album became part of that persona and that is why the album has a very moody ambience to it. And the lyrics add to this mood by "taking of stock of one's personal life."

A subtle slice of dream pop that's far removed from Delerium's darker roots, like their esoteric name suggests, Fauxliage are a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered.

Gareth Emery with Emma Hewitt - I Will Be The Same (Lyrics)

Do you call my name
When you wake up on the floor
Do you feel me now
But your not quite sure

When you turn around
Do you wonder what you’ve seen
I know your thoughts have seen
where you have been

I will be the same
You don’t wanna be here no more
You’ve opened up your eyes
And you need to go

To another place
Though its dark you’ll reach the shore
Time to see your find
What we’re looking for

All the time we’re carry on
And everything will change
You can know that I will be the same

Why the tide will take us under
But nothing else remains
You can know that I will be the same

I will be the same
I will be the same

Interview: John O'Callaghan

Still on top of the big sky, with a great year in his rearview, is John O'Callaghan. The Irish DJ and producer had a stunning 2009 and closes it down with a very special release. The 100th release of the 6 year old Captivating Sound label is safe in his hands, with a surprisingly diverse EP under his Joint Operations Centre alias. Produced for big-room madness, both 'Backup' and 'Cramped' damage the floors with a few heavy cracks. From inflammable tech-trance to deep progressiveness, John knows his way around with it. Reflecting on his recent DJ Mag feat and the release of his second artist album, 'Never Fade Away', we hook up with the number one Irish DJ for a short catch-up.

New Album from iiO:

iiO are currently working on new music for an all new album in 2010 on Made Records.

iiO (pronounced "eye-oh") is a New York City based house music act composed solely of producer and songwriter Markus Moser. Former member, vocalist and songwriter Nadia Ali, left in 2005 to pursue a solo career.

iiO are best known for their 2001 hit "Rapture", released as single in 2002, the lyrics to which were allegedly inspired by a meeting that occurred between Nadia Ali and an unidentified nightclub patron. Originally named Vaiio, a derivation of the Sony VAIO laptop on which the duo was creating much of their early work, the "Va" was dropped to prevent potential legal problems with Sony. The video for "Rapture" was directed by Andy Hylton.

iiO followed up "Rapture" with several successful remixes of the track by producers John Creamer & Stephane K, Armin Van Buuren and Deep Dish. A large number of bootleg and white label remixes ensued, including a highly-sought Paul Van Dyk remix. After "Rapture" was released, the duo followed suit with "At the End" in 2003. The release featured remixes by The Scumfrog and Saeed & Palash.

iiO's first album, Poetica, had been delayed several times and was finally released independently in March 2005 on Made Records, and worldwide in June 2006. "Smooth" was the first single released to promote the album, followed by "Runaway", "Kiss You", "Is It Love?".

In 2007, iiO released Reconstruction Time: The Best Of iiO Remixed, a remix album which contains the single "Rapture 2007".

Lyrics Of The Week: See The Sun

Matt Darey pres. Urban Astronauts - See The Sun (Lyrics)

Still is the water where my fears are bound
Watching me fall like a leaf
That was so brutal
Such a simple decision
When will I be released

You can close your eyes
But there is no illusion
Draw the line
Watch the river run dry

Now I see the sun will fade
Now I feel the choice you made
Now I hear the voice aloud and calling out behind me
Now I see the sun
Now I see the sun

Static and silence where my fears are bound
Watching me close and release
How do you let go of such a simple solution
Will it bring you release

You can close your eyes
But there is no illusion
Draw the line watch the river run dry

Aruna's "Red Room Sessions" series features the singer in an exclusive solo acoustic performance of her recent Beatport #1 single "Under Your Spell" with German duo Cosmic Gate.

An Evening With Late Night Alumni:

Late Night Alumni (Becky Jean Williams, Finn Bjarnson, John Hancock and Ryan Raddon) attracted a lot of attention with the 2005 dance classic, Empty Streets. With their atmospheric and immaculately-crafted style, and with the angelic crooning from front- woman, Becky Jean Williams, the buzz quickly spread, resulting in a strong underground following. Empty Streets soon became a mainstay in clubs and on radios around the world.

It’s been four years since Late Night Alumni’s last album, and I had a few questions for the elusive band. I caught up with them in Park City, Utah to discuss everything from their favorite fan mail to their upcoming album, Of Birds, Bees, Butterflies, Etc., and then, to party at a Kaskade show that night.

Interview: Suzy Solar

She’s been labeled “the queen of dance music.” Suzy Solar is definitely dance royalty – as one of the most sought after DJs in the scene, she’s toured the world, made TV appearances, hosts an internationally broadcasted radio show, and seen her share of thick and thin on her road to the top. The Solar star has DJed her way through an era when being a female DJ was extremely challenging, forcing her to rise above and working twice as hard than her male counterparts to garner respect and recognition. Still, she has risen to the challenge through her spectacular live shows and generous support for her productions.

Radio KUL speak to Suzy about some of her most colourful moments in her career, and what’s in store for the future. Definitely one of our most interesting interviews to date.

Tiff Lacey - Show Me The Way

Tiff Lacey - Show Me The Way

Release date: 14 December 2009
Cat number: TMCR002
Label: Time Circle Recordings

TRACKLIST:

Acoustic Mix
Ivan Spell Remix
Ivan Spell Dub Mix
Gabriel Lukosz Remix

The second release on Time Circle Recordings is a long-awaited single of one of the top-flight British vocalists — Tiff Lacey.

With just a piano accompaniment, the Acoustic mix offers the listener a rare treat, showcasing the sensuality of Tiff’s voice paired with her tremendous vocal execution. With its hypnotising vocals, haunting piano melodies and chilled-out mood, this mix will entice and draw you in.

Leaving behind any traces of simplicity and melancholy found in the Acoustic mix, American producer Gabriel Lucosz offers a perfect contrast in his bright and dynamic remix. This track abounds with synth pieces, and guitar riffs, but Lucosz has also seamlessly woven vocal chops and effects into the mix, with the end result being a colourful slice of progressive trance.

Well-known prog house producer Ivan Spell (Jee Productions) rounds up the pack with his remix and dub version as a bonus. Both mixes showcase all that is popular in progressive house today, infectious percussion and a deep atmospheric build up. Prog lovers will be delighted, for this remix really does it’s business.

Late Night Alumni - Light Reading

Late Night Alumni - Light Reading

Track 4 from the new Late Night Alumni album Of 'Birds, Bees, Butterflies, Etc'.

Late Night Alumni - Light Reading (Lyrics):

Some light reading, the last pages,
clearer now in certain places.
But you're hovering, half empty,
and I'm leaving, but you've left me.

Please just listen to reason,
these aren't chapters,
they're seasons.

I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend,
you've closed the book on your end.
If you pick up, pull out, does it have to be now?
I tear out those last few pages, less time; more places.

I've read all the way to the bitter end to the end.
You outlast your friends.
If you pick up, pull out,
does it have to be now?

Dash Berlin feat. Emma Hewitt - Waiting (Acoustic Version)

The latest Dash Berlin single is still taking the world by storm, fueling his rocket-ship ascent, which took him straight to the 105th position in the annual DJ Mag Pol. “Unbelievable!” says the humble Dutchman about the news; “this is more than I ever expected to happen so early in my career. My thanks goes out to all the fans that decided I was worth their precious vote this year”.

The collaboration with Australian born singer Emma Hewitt climbed all the way to number one on the global Trance charts. Both the original and the recent hype-filling ‘Dash Berlin 4AM Mix’ are finding their way into the sacred record bags of the world biggest tastemakers with the speed of light.

The pearl inside every great vocal Trance track is of course the song itself. When removing the epic wall of sound, with nothing left but vocals and an acoustic guitar, the naked song can reveal itself as a strong piece of genuine song writing.

Dash Berlin: “During the studio sessions with Emma and her brother Anthony we often used the guitar as the main instrument in the song writing process. It’s interesting to get away from the synthesizers and the beats in the first fragile moments of creating. In this way you can really focus on the song itself without being distracted by technology. Once the basic idea is finished you can get creative with the recorded vocals like you can when doing a remix. It’s that creative freedom that delivers new and exciting results”.

For those of you who are curious how that sounds, Dash recently created a video from an intimate acoustic version of ‘Waiting’.

Upcoming Vocal Track: Luke Terry feat. Tiff Lacey - The Last Farewell

Luke Terry feat. Tiff Lacey - The Last Farewell

Next up on Unearthed Red is Luke Terry's new single entitled The Last Farewell featuring the enchanting vocals of Tiff Lacey, or without if you prefer the instrumental versions! As we have came to expect from Luke this is another lush uplifting piece of trance. The track builds with some graceful plucks, subtle arpeggios and twisting acid lines, unleashing an epic pad during the breakdown and a mesmerising main hook.

First up on remix duties is the very much in form Ronski Speed. Ronski has ripped the track apart in his unique blend of uplifting techy pogressive trance. A driving bassdrum and solid bassline surge the track forward whilst an epic string section works its way in and continues into the breakdown. Ronski introduces a huge pad which takes centre stage after the breakdown, absolute euphoria.

Ultimate is next to strut his stuff. Dmitry's remix is a breathtaking melodic trance affair from the outset. With splendid plucks and unique melody twists the track builds to a dreamy beatific breakdown creating a huge sense of bliss. He introduces the main hook, tweaked to his own style, only then for another exquisite synth to rise up and complement it throughout the rest of the track.

Rounding up things is Trance Arts, and unless you have been living under a rock for the last year or so, you will know what you are in for now! A superb banging remix from our resident trance machine. Explosive from the start of the track, Torsten introduces his own build lead, delicately layered with vocal chops, acid noises, arpeggios and synth fills. The breakdown features a smooth guitar section complemented by some groovy breakbeat percussion before unleashing an absolute monster of a synth playing his interpretation of the main hook which builds up to an awe-inspiring climax and stupendous main section.
