HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Artist Of The Week:

Maria Mashkova

… Music is more than just a Sound …

with this slogan, Maria Mashkova dedicates herself to all her projects concerning electronic music.

(Equipment for sets at the moment: 2 Pioneer CD Player and Mixer)

You can describe her style as a mixture of tribal and progressive house melting with advanced trance sounds to transport her specific kind of energy to the crowd on the floor. She loves it when the audience understands and is open to being taken on a journey through her set!

Born in eastern Berlin, Maria is the youngest in a multicultural family. Maria grew up with classical music, as the daughter of an enthusiastic hobby pianist and as the sister of a choir guitarist. Her first contact with vinyl occurred at the age of six while scanning the record-collection of her parents - Abba to Tchaikovsky. The record-player of the household was later confiscated, and musical entertainment within the family home was limited. After the falling of the Berlin Wall, Maria soon got access to electronic music, which she frequently likes to refer to as a kind of ‘digitized classical music‘. She feels there are infinite possibilities to interpret the music for oneself and therefore it is very suitable for diving into.

It all began in Canada. Because of her triathlon training, Maria moved to the North American Continent for one year back in 1997. Electronic music wasn’t very common there, so she began to put together several DJ-sets for herself. Her basic equipment for this task was an old Technics record player, only 3% pitchable, a second, only half-functioning player, and a double tape deck. Thus the desired sets resulted in a clumsy sequence of tracks, but nevertheless were sufficient as a steady companion on Maria’s running and biking trips.

Back in Berlin, Maria immersed herself in working with her newly acquired Gemini-clones and a mixer bought dirt-cheap at a fair, and refined her technique and track selection… her passion was lit up. Finally her efforts led to a feature on Paul van Dyk’s radio program “Soundfiles”, now known as “Soundgarden” on Radio Fritz. Her First club experience was during gigs in underground clubs.

From 1998 to 2000, Maria went on the air with her own radio and TV-Program called “Fragile”, regularly broadcasted on OKB (Offener Kanal Berlin). It was her goal to present an overview of the electronic music scene here in Berlin. She had interviews with Corvin Dalek, Namito, Jay Ray, Mijk van Dijk and many more. Naturally, party-reviews and publication of events to come were also part of the program.

Between 1998 and 2000, Maria had gigs at Love Parade. In 2001 she was selected as the winner of the “Mothership Contest”, on the love-truck sponsored by Alcatech. After winning a big prize package, she rocked the crowd for two hours and was booked for further events.

After a break from 2002, for different private reasons, Maria relaunched in 2006. Many things developed since than. 2008 has several new and exciting projectscoming up, always according to her philosophy: “…Music is more than just a sound!

Lyrics Of The Week:

Cor Fijneman feat. Melissa Mathes - Disappear (Lyrics)

Image: Melissa Mathes

Crossing the street, opening the door
There’s no telling what could happen
Crime scenes, mad dreams, wait for you

What are you waiting for?
I might disappear
I really need to know
I need to know
Everyday I try
And I might disappear
What are you waiting for?
I need to know

.. is sinking under
Afraid someone might blow your cover
Love, lies, street, spies
Time is needed

What are you waiting for?
I might disappear
I really need to know
I need to know
Everyday I try
And I might disappear
What are you waiting for?
I need to know

The coast is clear now, wait for a sign
Calling you up, your voice on the wire
Light, stars, bright, cars
Walk fast now

What are you waiting for?
I might disappearI really need to know
I need to knowEveryday I try
But I might disappear
What are you waiting for?
I need to know

Give me a reason
Give me a reason
Give me a reason
Give me a reason

Lights, stars, bright, cars
Walk fast now
What are you waiting for?
I might disappear
I really need to know
I need to know
Everyday I try
I might disappear
What are you waiting for?
I need to know

Flashing lights, the street at night
Take your …

I might disappear

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Marcie Uncovers The Truth Behind Dance’s Biggest Anthems:

If you haven’t had the chance to listen to Behind The Lyric with Marcie, now’s a good time to catch up. It’s a very listenable radio show that we highly recommend to both vocal trance enthusiasts and to those who want an introduction to EDM.

You think you knew what the lyrics to all your singalongs meant, or you always thought that sticky hook that kept playing in your head was just another silly sexy club tune, but you’re in for big surprises when you listen to this radio show.

Not quite like anything out there, Marcie offers the accessibility, depth, and insight to lyrics of clubland’s biggest anthems through Behind The Lyric, as she puts you in touch with the singers and songwriters of those very tunes by having them narrate to you while navigating through their inspirations and motivations of each of the featured tracks.

In the most recent episode, BTL featured Julie Thompson from “These Shoulders” by Signalrunners, Zara Taylor of “Lost” by Sunlounger, and Chris Jones of “Going Wrong” with Armin and DJ Shah, all of which were crowned 2008’s massive blowout tracks, watermarking these tracks on every flashback of 2008 from now on. This is how we’ll always musically remember 08, and yet at the time of the recording of this BTL edition, the interviewees spoke freely without realising the acclaims their tunes were about to receive.
Well, we’ve known the recording sensation Marcie for a while now, ever since she guest hosted Radio KUL 050 early this year. And we’ve watched her music receive acclaim and support from major DJs this year.

As expected, such accomplishment from Marcie should only be followed with a dose of grueling Extra questions to find out what our favourite vocal sensation’s been doing, and to put her on the spot with some deep thought challenges on her take on EDM. Here’s how it went.

It’s been more than a year since you started Behind The Lyric. Now we’re 9 episodes in. How’s the response been from listeners and those featured on the show ?

It’s been an amazing whirlwind of activity putting this show together! When I first started it, I could only dream it would go as far as it has. I’m really excited about its growth! I’m grateful to the artists who have opened themselves up on the show. I think sharing ourselves through our music is already extremely intimate, and the Artists have gone a step further and shared even more of themselves with Listeners. I have learned a lot from other Artists, and I love how there is now a ‘behind the lyric family’ of artists. Each show has its own character depending on the combination of guests.
Listeners have been extremely devoted and enthusiastic. I’ve learned from listeners too. They tell me what they want to know about, and confide stories about how they relate personally to specific tracks. There’s a deep dialogue happening between listeners and artists as a result of the show. I’ve learned more than I ever knew before about how music keeps us going, and is a lifeforce for so many.

How long does it take to produce an episode and to compile the interviews ?

It takes awhile. I think I spend about 30 hours compiling and editing interviews for each show. I arrange everything and get it all laid out. Then there is the mixing time, which I’ve had some amazing help with. Most recently, Garth Ivan has been working with me on that part of things, and his guidance and ideas are indispensible. Putting the show together is a bit like doing a puzzle. We have a wide range of styles and bpms to mesh together. I try to use speaking segments to enhance the music, and not crowd it out. Promo is time consuming too. It’s definitely been a huge time commitment for me, but I don’t regret a second of it!
If you were stranded on an island and only had one episode of BTL to keep you company, which would it be and why ?

Oooh! That’s a tough question because, like I said, each episode has a unique character! I have a huge personal investment in each show because of the time I spent with it. I think I have most of the interviews memorized. I love Episode 6 because it has an especially multi-cultural guestlist. Episode 8 is fun because we combined many genres, from dirty electro house, to light airy melodic trance. I really can’t pick. And actually, I think that might be okay, as I’m going to try hard not to be stranded on an island.

Single out one of the singer / songwriters that have been featured on BTL and tell us why you love or despise that person so much.

I’ve loved working with all the Singer/Songwriters I’ve featured. I’ve found them all to be genuine and excited about the idea. The show is a great way for us Singer/Songwriters to connect with each other. There is a lot of mutual respect and support going around, which has been inspiring and hearwarming for me to see. I could say something nice about everyone. I love all the various accents! They are so much fun to listen to, and I really respect the artists who answer questions in English even though it is not their native language.
What’s next for BTL ?

It’s time to celebrate the 10th episode! It’s going to be massive!! Here are a few highlights to wet your appetite: Carla Werner will be talking about the classic Oakenfold track, ‘Southern Sun’, Betsie Larkin will discuss ‘Made of Love’, from Ferry Corstens new album, Sylvia Tosun will share her thoughts on her new chart topping release, Underlying Feeling, and more!

You have been very busy lately. Tell us about your most recent productions / projects. Will we be able to see you on tour some time soon ?
Yes, 2008 was a busy year. I laid a good foundation for myself, and learned more about where I want to focus in the future. 2009 has some new avenues to explore, new sounds to experiment with, etc. I have upcoming releases on Loverush UK, that I’m especially excited about. They are different style tracks, with amazing remixes. My recent release with Yamin, called ‘No One’, is at #2 on the Audiojelly sales chart. I’m happy that people are relating to that tune because Yamin and I worked very hard on it, and it was a lyric that was emotionally difficult to discover in myself. We have a follow up called ‘Forward Motion’ that will be out in early ‘09, and is possibly our best release ever. We’ve written a lot of tunes together, and I’m proud of the evolution we’ve had.
I hope I’ll get over to Malaysia to tour. That would be incredible. Or even just to party with you guys! It looks like you have so much fun!

We realise that EDM songwriters have no clue during writing that their tune may turn out to be one of the biggest record ever made. What’s a giveaway that a tune may be a smash hit or a lost cause ?

I don’t think any artist ever really knows how their work will go over with the public. Sometimes I guess tracks can be part of an intense promotional machine, thus virtually guaranteeing commercial success, but I don’t think there’s ever a way to predict what will be aesthetically pleasing to people. There’s a lot of luck involved, and so I try to write what I feel, and see projects through as far as I can take them. Then I take some distance from them, and try to get some objectivity, and see if I still feel they are worth releasing, or should be held in my private reserves.
People often ask me to write ‘hooks’, but I think that is a very difficult sort of request. A ‘hook’ is defined differently by everyone. It’s totally subjective. I have written vocals in 15 minutes that became popular, and I’ve slaved away at vocals for 24 hours only to have them rejected. I’ve shopped tracks that have been rejected by numerous labels, only to be accepted, released, and topped a chart. Then I’ve had tracks not make much of an impact in the scene, even though I was sure they would do well. I think if I try to find rhyme or reason in it, I’ll go nuts. I’m gonna write songs and sing no matter what, so that is what I focus on.

What seems to be theme of your recent lyrics and why ?

Well a lot of the time a track gets released months after I’ve written it. So often the themes of my releases are different than the themes I’m currently focusing on in the studio. I’ve gone through playful periods where I’ve written some dirty sexy cheeky stuff. I’ve spent time focusing on nature themes. I wrote a series of vocals about the literal and figurative ways we imprison ourselves and others. I touch on politics and spirituality in my lyrics. I recently suffered a rather painful heart-break, and I spent a lot of the autumn writing songs exploring my loneliness, confusion, sense of abandonment, etc. Currently I’m in a good place emotionally, and my tunes have been happier, and exploring other themes besides the broken heart.

Are you married or … ?

I’m not married. I am more open to the idea of marriage than I used to be, but I’m not quite ready for that yet.

Theoretical situation : Armin, Sunlounger, Andy Duguid, Thrillseekers, and Signalrunners all want you for a tune. But due to the time constraint, you can only pick to work with one of them. Their all fantastic tunes in their own style of production, but there can only be one. So which one will it be, and why ?
Sunlounger has some of the most emotional, heart-wrenching tunes this year, so I think I’d choose that. I feel like the instrumental I would receive would have loads of vocal melodies living in it, waiting to be discovered, and that would be very inspiring.

But that’s a really hard question!!!! lol. You ask tricky ones!

Summarise 2008 in 3 words. Then what you want in 2009 in 3 words.

2008: Work, Struggles, Growth
2009: Growth, Love, Surprise

Behind The Lyric plays anytime you want it. Marcie will be singing on more tunes and maybe live in your city over the next few months. At time of writing, Yamin Feat Marcie - “No One” is #2 on AudioJelly’s sales charts.

Artist Of The Week:

TyDi

The latest gift from Queensland, Australia to the global Dance scene is tyDi. At just 19 years old, tyDi has claimed the position of #12 in the Inthemix Technics Top 50 national DJ poll and #3 for his home state of Queensland. As a DJ, tyDi’s skills and flair for interactive performance are in great demand. He performs regularly at the best clubs and events nationally and has started his international career before even turning 20. As a Producer, tyDi’s tracks and remixes can be found internationally on vinyl and CD, his music features on 3 different compilation albums and his own artist album will be released this year.

tyDi’s inclination towards music started at an extremely young age, he studied, played and wrote music throughout his schooling years. His vocation into the DJ arena began at 14 when he found himself behind the turntables and in the studio. tyDi focussed upon his production skills, culminating with his first release onto vinyl at age 16. Also eager to display his secure DJ talents, tyDi entered “Brisbane DJ Wars” and the “central station DJ competition”, effortlessly winning both DJ competitions and propelling his name towards immediate prominence. These incredible efforts achieved so quickly at such a young age created immediate headlines, where he was regularly invited to play at clubs interstate from age 16!

Gathering a large following appreciative of his interactive and highly charged DJ performances, tyDi has rocked many a dance floor throughout Australia’s clubbing districts. With so many accomplishments for one still so young, tyDi recognised the need to formally develop his musical faculties. By age 17, The Queensland Conservatorium of Music likewise acknowledged the potential of tyDi’s immense talents, accepting him as a student for Bachelor of Music Technology. Balancing his study with his DJ performances, tyDi continued to improve his production skills. A number of collaborations with many well recognized artists prompted tyDi to actively pursue the path of Trance, though his musical genius is vast.

His productions range from Progressive to tech, house, pop and even film music. A performance at Australia’s award winning No.1 Nightclub for “Godskitchen” lead to a weekly residency at “Family Nightclub” – though tyDi was barely of the legal age to even be a patron. Nevertheless, tyDi’s presence at “Family” each Friday night has generated a rising appeal and awareness in Queensland’s heretofore deficient Trance arena. Not content for his music to be reserved merely for the dance floor, tyDi’s live mixes have also played across radio waves throughout Australia on Triple J and many other radio stations. He has continued to encourage national and international interest by performing before mass crowds at Summafieldayze, Big Day Out, Slinky, Godskitchen, Sublime@Home, Progress@GAS, Adventj*h, Mayhem, and many other major Dance clubs / events– particularly Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Darwin. tyDi continues to be billed alongside many of the worlds biggest artists. When most 18 year olds had only just started going clubbing, tyDi had already supported the worlds No.1 DJ Paul Van Dyk.

In 2006 tyDi’s remixes and productions were signed to “Mixology Digital Records”, with his original tune ‘Familiar Streets’ (featuring Holly Ryan on vocals) released internationally as a record and on CD single. ‘Familiar Streets’ appears both in its original form and as a remix on beXta’s compilation “Mixoloy 9”. tyDi’s track “Is It Cold” also features on the compilation “A Night of Trance – The Anthems”, which was released to critical praise, concluding with a stellar performance at “Home” in Sydney.

Finally, tyDi’s ambition to become an international DJ was realised at the end of 2006 with heady performances to packed dance floors in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. With the upcoming release of a self-produced artist album, a mix CD, the release of several new tracks on the horizon and more opportunities for international and national performances, tyDi has an assured vision for his future

Lyrics Of The Week:

Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren - Saved Again

Saved again, my friend
When all around you lives are down
You found the light before you tripped and fell a victim

So is simplicity
The key to unlocking life’s big mystery
You found the pieces you yourself at one point couldn’t feel

Keep listening over again
Over again
I’ve got something to tell you
Something to tell you

Keep listening over again
Over again
I’ve got something to tell you
Something to tell you

Just watch and sit in silence
While the record plays your memories
Life is simple when your world is a world of melodies

Just watch and sit in silence
While the record plays your memories
Life is simple when your world is a world of melodies

Life is a world of melodies
Life is a world of melodies

Vocalist Of The Week:

Adrina Thorpe

Singer/songwriter and pianist, Adrina Thorpe, is a refreshing sound in adult alternative pop. Her style reflects the softer side of music, but that doesn't mean it doesn't shake people up. Many who have purchased her album have reported musical addiction. Adrina has been writing songs almost as long as she can remember. Her first song was written on a rainy car ride home when she was almost seven. "I remember looking through the foggy streaked window at little bursts of light outside in the pitch black sky, hearing the sound of the car's engine, and coming up with a song that brought me to tears that night. It was a song about a friend of mine who left our school without ever telling me goodbye. I think from that day on, I've always held a special place in my heart for melancholy songs."
Adrina's musical experience is varied, including a background in classical piano and theater. She just finished a full length album, "elusive", with producers Dave Bassett (producing credits with Lisa Loeb, Justincase, Joe Bonamassa, etc.) and Phil Swann (producing credits with Helen Slater, Phil Christie, etc.) Although you can hear bits of classical influence in her piano playing on the album, it reflects many other influences as well. Delicate piano melodies and lush vocals weave in and out of each other, drifting amid the punchy bass and drum lines. Like paper-thin china, like sunrise on the grey ocean waves...Adrina's melodies captivate listeners with their distinct beauty.
Adrina is currently working on her 2nd solo album which will be available sometime in the new year.

Artist Of The Week:

Samantha James
Songwriter/performer Samantha James has spent the past three years honing her estimable skills as a modern-day singer/songwriter within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Basia, Amel Larrieux, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba.

On her debut album “Rise” for San Francisco based indie label Om Records, Samantha teamed up with producer and co-writer Sebastian Arocha Morton—AKA ROCAsound (Sting, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Fila Brazilia and Rick James for the classic finale’ of the hit film Little Miss Sunshine.)

A native of Los Angeles’ Topanga Canyon where she currently resides, James is the grand daughter of Emmy Award-winning composer/conductor David Rose. James’ lyrics resonate with the pain of lost relationships and joy of loving connections.

“Samantha has a unique and strong sense of style as a both a songwriter and performer”, enthuses Arocha Morton. “Talented, beautiful, passionate, and dedicated… Samantha James is the real thing—as both recording artist and stage performer. She is a welcome and beautiful new face in the world of dance-electronic music.”

Lyrics Of The Week:

Yamin feat. Marcie - So Tired (Lyrics)

Make believe and hold you near
I don't know what to think I fear
Won't you tell me what you're doing here?

I could use a bit of grace
and I could use a smiling face
So won't you tell me why we're in this place?

I'll come through the door tonight
and I'll be faced with another fight
won't you tell me when we'll get it right?

It may be better that I walk away
I'd rather not be wasting another day
Won't you tell me what could make me stay?

I'm so tired of angry tones,
feels as if we're too far gone,
I just want to make this place our home.

Vocalist Of The Week:

Jillian Goldin

Jillian Goldin’s music, both earthy and ethereal, reflects the awe and passion of timeless nature. Its soul-touching alchemy has attracted attention and award-winning acclaim, deriving from her talent both as a classically trained vocalist and burgeoning songwriter. In Jillian’s debut album, Origins, new age and contemporary world music meld to create lush and inventive sounds unique to her, heralding the arrival of a vibrant new artist.

Hailing from Boston, Jillian began singing in her father’s home studio at the age of six. She recalls with a laugh, “He had me record a song about saving the rainforests!” But her love of music was sparked, and she soon committed her life to the field. Developing herself first as a vocalist and performer, Jillian graduated with honors from the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music, winning the George Castelle Memorial Award in voice.

But a wandering eye led Jillian to the arena of computer music, and she began to supplement her classical studies with compositional ones in the form of video game music. Actively participating as an arranger, podcaster, and submissions evaluator at OverClocked ReMix (an online community dedicated to the genre), Jillian’s music began to garner an impressive fan base eager to hear her original work. In 2007, she even performed on the popular video game Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword. “Those who first found me through my video game arrangements have been so supportive,” she says appreciatively. “The community is largely what drove me to start writing original music.”

It also drove her right into the hands of zircon (Andrew Aversa) – fellow remixer, composer, and producer of electronic music. The highly lauded artist quickly became Jillian’s frequent collaborator, and has since served as her engineer and assistant-producer on Origins. From the first few notes, Jillian’s debut album is her singular vision of where new age music can, and should, go. Relying upon her stunning voice and lyrics not only as the soaring lead, but also an amalgam of other backing instruments, the result is a texture that envelops the listener in her warm sound.

Much of the material on Origins is nature-themed, reflecting Jillian’s longtime love and concern for the environment. The album itself was released on Earth Day 2008 in conjunction with a fundraiser for The Nature Conservancy’s Plant A Billion Trees campaign. “My parents instilled those beliefs in me starting with the rainforest song,” Jillian notes, “and now that I have released my own music, I feel empowered to actually make a difference.” Aversa is similarly concerned with social causes. Two of the duo’s collaboration tracks, “Red July” and “Shadows”, deal with issues of war and homelessness – smartly and passionately displaying the artists’ mutual commitment.

Already, the reception of Jillian’s Origins has been overwhelmingly positive. In March, “Hajime” won the $5,000 Grand Prize awarded by OurStage.com, triumphing over twenty thousand other song submissions. The same track received Radio Mystic’s Best of 2007 award, third place in the Indie International Songwriting Contest, and both “Red July” and “Avalon” have since won the OurStage.com New Age/World Prize.

Jillian Goldin is a rare artist whose talent matches her passion. Committed to impacting listeners with her music, she is set to be both a critical and popular favorite, redefining what people think of the classification “new age.” With Origins, that mix of irresistible talent and passion is on display, and Jillian leaves little doubt that she is an artist people will be hearing for years to come.

(Origins is now available through the music page here, as well as CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and other major distributors.)
___________________________

Origins
Blending exotic instrumentation with passionate and ethereal vocals, the earth comes alive as Origins invokes its new beginnings. The album, carried by Jillian's powerful voice, is a response to the lack of lyric-centric works in contemporary New Age/World music - unified by themes of mystery, plight, and catharsis. With the magic of musical storytelling, Jillian takes you on a voyage through the awakening, and invites you to celebrate in its mysteries.

Artist Of The Week:

Late Night Alumni

Late Night Alumni are Becky Jean Williams, Finn Bjarnson, John Hancock, Ryan Raddon (aka Kaskade).

Late Night Alumni is the alias of DJ/producer Kaskade, currently signed to ‘Om Records’ and loaned to the Hed Kandi label. They tend to mix Dance/house music with strings and soft trance like vocals from their lead singer, Becky Jean William’s smooth voice. Their current album Empty Streets was successful enough to be made into a polyphonic ringtone.

As an 80’s teenager in the suburbs of Chicago, Raddon was fascinated by the sound of New Wave, having been exposed to music as diverse as Tears For Fears, The Cult and The Smiths, primarily through Frankie Knuckles’ DJ sets in the city. From then on he religiously listened to local dance radio and bought new records at every opportunity, finally taking to the decks at the end of the decade.

Circa 1992 Ryan moved to Salt Lake City to continue his education, where he DJ’d and ran a local record shop to fund his studies, eventually building a studio and driving the upcoming scene by releasing several tracks on his own Mechanized Records imprint.

In 2000 he created the Kaskade moniker and has since garnered praise from the worldwide dance press and quality house music fans alike for his musical output on various labels and talents as a DJ. Ben Watt and Roger Sanchez are just two of house’s leading lights who are big fans of the Kaskade sound, which Ryan insists comes from his outlook on life in general “I’m an optimistic guy. There’s a lot of love in house music and this is just what comes out.”

Lyrics Of The Week:

Nick Murray feat. Tiff Lacey - The Sweetest Sound (Lyrics)
Subterranea is where I was bound'
Til you fathomed the depths deep inside
Alone and reflecting, anchored down
You lifted the weight of my pride
An outcast rescued by your crusade
Embraced by the warmth of your face
You banished the dark and the shade
Surrounded by light of your grace

And every day you amaze me more and more
Every day you amaze me more

The sweetest sound
Is when you say my name
It's the sweetest sound
My heart is bound
And I'll never be the same
It's the sweetest sound

Hey yeah
It's the sweetest sound

Uplifted, I've arrived at new heights
Thanks to you and your unrelenting love
Like a gift from the Gods, I have sight
Of truth that comes only from above

My days in exile are long gone
Cuz I know this love won't fade
I believe this where I belong
And I know you feel the same
Ahhh I know you feel the same
Hey

The sweetest sound
Is when you say my name
It's the sweetest sound
My heart is bound
And I'll never be the same
It's the sweetest sound

The sweetest sound
Is when you say my name
It's the sweetest sound
My heart is bound
And I'll never be the same
It's the sweetest sound

It's the sweetest sound

Vocalist Of The Week:

Ashley Tomberlin
Never one to follow convention, Ashley Tomberlin began her love affair with music early on but initially resisted the urge. Consoling herself with at, poetry and academia, she entered University only to rediscover her true passion for music. After receiving a classical guitar as a gift, she began to play, coaxing the fiery poetry she once wrote into song. Unsure of her own voice and talent, it took another unexpected event to finally push her from obscurity, directly into the path of listeners all across the world.

After a chance encounter in the spring of 2002, this unknown vocalist and musician from the United states began a collaboration with UK producer Laurence Rapaccioli already known for his work under the artist name Arksun. After completing a few initial tracks, they eventually lost touch until the fall of 2003 when they began to take another look at what they had created the previous year. With a renewed sense of purpose, the musical partnership finally gelled, and Luminary was born.

It wasn't long before their music began to garner the attention of established independent labels such as Lost Language and Ministry. Ashley's first Luminary track "My World" was snapped up by Lost Language along with "Dark Eyes" in the fall of 2003 to be included on Ben Lost's Exhibition II compilation. Since then, "My World" has grown into a full on 3 disc release including remixes by Andy Moor, Nikola Gala and Pesh. Played out early on by Armin Van Buuren, the track thrust Luminary to the forefront and My World was quickly picked up by Tiesto to be used on his In Search of Sunrise 4 compilation album.

The second release "Wasting" was burnt into Armin's A State of Trance 2005 compilation practically before it had even been signed as a single and was swiftly released on Armada's infamous Soundpiercing label. Now joining forces with Anjunabeats, Ashley and Luminary next released Amsterdam on Feburary 6, 2006; charting at no. 1 for Paul Van Dyk in the December issue of Mixmag and rated at 5/5 by DJ Magazine. Additionally, Amsterdam has been played out everywhere from BBC Radio 1's "Dave Pearce Dance Anthems" to TATW Above and Beyond's Trance Around the World and ASOT Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance.

Her next collaboration with Above and Beyond on their debut album Tri-State was released on March 04, 2006. Collaborating with Tony, Paavo and Jono on a stunning track titled Can't Sleep, Ashley again demonstrated her trademark vocal style; combining breathless melodies with intense emotion. This in addition to her distinctive lyrical phrasing, has helped set her apart from so many other vocalists in the genre.

After another chance meeting with Paul Van Dyk last year, Ashley was given the opportunity to collaborate on some new album tracks for soon to be released "In Between", and the rest, as they say "is history". You can expect great things from this up and coming artist, but most of all, expect the unexpected! It has been a strange journey, but a good one, and Ashley is definitely keeping her watchful eyes on the future and her ears open to new inspiration.

Lyrics Of The Week: Strangers We've Become

Arnej feat. Josie - Strangers We've Become (Lyrics)

I don't even know you
not sure that I want to anymore
but maybe there's something that could change my mind

we loved and we hated
mistreated and prayed upon ourselves
but now that we're wise we realize it might be time to rewind but
where would we go from here
where would we go

CHORUS

in, out, in, out, we fell so hard, so young
look at the strangers we've become
no doubt, without the love we need, we're done
look at the strangers we've become
