Pure Bliss Vocals (100):

Behind The Voice: Cat Martin

Though the biggest part of a track is made by a producer, it’s important not to underestimate the power of a good pair of vocals. A voice can make or break a production, strengthen or weaken it and add that little bit extra. A hidden meaning can be translated through touching lyrics and words can get stuck in the minds of numerous music lovers and eventually turn out to be eternal one-liners, as the track grows out to be a true classic. Time for Armada Music to look beyond the obvious beats, melodies and loops of it all. As we take a look Behind the Voice of Cat Martin.

Cat Martin; vivid red hair, bright blue eyes, and a tender voice that makes you wonder off to dreamland. ‘Love Always Fades’, the proggy vocal track with Dave Graham, was her beautiful introduction to trance. This first release, on the Soundpiercing imprint, has left quite an impression. And it didn’t only affect the listeners, but Cat herself too. Time to find out some more about this vocalist from Northern Ireland.

Armada Music: When did you first started singing?

Cat: ”I was never one of those children who were singing as soon as they could talk, I was very shy and the thought of drawing that kind of attention to myself was terrifying. But I do remember round about age 9/10 singing along to the soundtrack of The Bodyguard in my bedroom! Like most kids, I dreamt of becoming a singer, but it seemed too far fetched. I wanted to be a doctor.”

Armada Music: When and how did you notice there was more than just a good ring to it?

Cat: “Embarrassingly for me, I got rejected at auditions for our school choir, haha! I was so nervous. I never thought my voice was anything special. But I do remember once singing along to a song in the car with my friends when my best friend said, “Wow, is that you singing?!” I was taken aback but pleased as he meant it as a compliment! And I suppose when I started getting positive responses to my acoustic songs I started to think that maybe I had a good thing going.”

Armada Music: Could you tell us a bit about projects you’ve done so far? Are you doing some songwriting too?

Cat: “I write all my own lyrics and melodies. As I don’t think I have an amazing singing voice, I rely on my songwriting a lot to make the most of what I do have. I’ve been writing since I took up guitar, so it must be nearly 9 years now. For me, songwriting can be one of the most positive things you can do in a bad situation. When I wrote ‘Love Always Fades’, I never thought that it would be such a positive solution to such a negative situation.

Aside from my trance stuff, I’ve been making acoustic tracks for years now. But I found the process of working and performing as a soloist to be fairly limiting, so that’s why I looked to trance music. I thought working with someone, in a genre I love would be a fun challenge. Then I met Dave Graham by answering an ad he placed online…and here we are!”

Armada Music: How did you end up in EDM?

Cat: “I can’t remember not being a fan of EDM. I got particularly into trance when I was 12 or 13. I bought the Trance Nation compilations and loved all the vocal tracks. When I took up guitar aged 14, I began listening to more piano and guitar driven music, so EDM took a backseat, although it was always there in the background. Then just last year I went through a breakup (the one ‘Love Always Fades’ is loosely based around) and wanted something new and uplifting that I could listen to when driving. So trance was the obvious choice!

When writing ‘Love Always Fades’, Dave had the idea “Save me from this nightmare” so I used that as my inspiration and started writing from there. Once we had a final version I let my friend Adrian hear the track as he is a producer (called Hidden Agenda) and he immediately said to send it to Armin to play on A State Of Trance. So, I did! At that point Armin emailed back asking to sign the track. That was such a great day and I started to think we had stumbled upon something pretty special.”

Armada Music: What makes a vocal a good vocal in your eyes?

Cat: “I think a good vocal needs to make the listener think, ‘That vocal makes this track.’ People should never think ‘Oh, I prefer the instrumental’ or ‘The vocal ruins it.’ A vocal should draw you in, hypnotise you, make you shiver and of course have you singing along!”

Armada Music: Got any vocal heroes yourself?

Cat: “Jaren can do no wrong in my eyes. She really has everything; the melodies, a beautiful tone to her voice and her lyrics are always spectacular. With her music you never come away wondering what it was all about. Her songs aren’t like some vocal trance songs, they are proper, full songs, like you would find in pop or rock genres. Jaren is making trance a lot more accessible. Audrey Gallagher is doing really well too, she has such a unique voice and has offered me some good advice. We’re both from Northern Ireland so she is a great role model to me just starting out. Finally, I really love Justine Suissa’s work. ‘Burned With Desire’ is pretty much my favourite song. I use it to convert my friends to trance!”

Armada Music: What about singing live? Confident enough to do it?

Cat: “These days singing live doesn’t really bother me, which is strange! I’ve never sang in front of any huge crowds or anything like that but I have done a few gigs, just my acoustic and me! But ask me again in a few years as I might have finally performed in front of more than 60 people!”

Armada Music: ‘Love Always Fades’ had just been released. Received any feedback yet?

Cat: “This really has been the best experience of my life! I’ve had messages from people all over the world. My friends are pretty good at finding little articles online about it and usually if I see anything, I reply and say thank you. There was one guy from Pakistan who said it was the best trance track he had ever heard, and another guy who said it was the progressive track he’d been waiting 2 years for. Both those comments made me smile!”

Armada Music: Any more exciting vocal stuff coming up?

Cat: “Well, Dave and I work very well together so we have a few more projects in the pipeline. But I also have a great partnership with another Northern Irish trance duo called Tucandeo. We’ve just signed our first track and it should be out April/May time. I really am blown away by the response to ‘Love Always Fades’ and it’s led me to be working on tracks with producers in Poland, the Netherlands and Norway. I also do work with an up and coming N.Irish label called Stampgevaar. I’m quite busy at the minute but I wouldn’t want it any other way! Hopefully I’ll have a few more releases this year.”

Armada Music: Dreaming of any special collabs?

Cat: “Working with Armin van Buuren would be a dream come true. I just properly discovered him back in March and since then I’ve been hooked and listening to everything I can find to make up for lost time! I also love the vocal tracks that DJ Shah, Ronski Speed, Jonas Steur and The Thrillseekers make. Of course working with Dave Graham is brilliant too. He is the most humble, original and talented producer I have ever met. I really think he’s going to be a huge name in the years to come.”

Armada Music: A few choices: Acoustic or Non-acoustic?

Cat: “At the minute, non-acoustic music; it really is true that trance can take you over. I don’t listen to anything else these days! But I promised myself that I wouldn’t listen to trance for a week. It’s so I can get the benefit of other genres in my writing, not just trance. So far it’s going OK, I’ve been listening to a U.K. band called Bloc Party a lot.”

Dry vocals or Filtered/reverbed vocals?

Cat: “It’s amazing what can be done with a vocal. I record all my stuff at home and send them dry to a producer. At that point it’s their time to be creative! I always love hearing a quick sample of a work in progress. So I would have to go with filtered and reverbed vocals!”

Natural talent or Singing Lessons?

Cat: “I have just started taking singing lessons actually! I don’t want to change my voice too much, and I hope I won’t start singing in some sort of theatrical accent but I do want to improve my range and iron out any bad habits I’ve picked up along the way. When I start doing ‘Jazz Hands’, it might be time to stop the lessons!”

Lyrics Of The Week: Not Enough Time

Cosmic Gate feat. Emma Hewitt - Not Enough Time(Lyrics)

With their wicked words they'll try to hold you down
No this is not our fate; the lives in which they are bound
And there is something more we know it has to be found
I know the world won't wait, the tide is turning around...

And there's not enough time...

With all their wicked words they'll never hold you down
No this is not our fate; the tide is turning around

No there's not enough time...

In the fallout of the wasted, in the halflight
I stand before you in the last dance of an old life...
Now the cool wind's blowing and we can't stay, but it's alright...
When the night is gone I will still be here...

No there's not enough time...

Miss Nine
In the heavily male dominated DJ market, it is rare to find a female DJ who can create a huge impact on the scene in a short amount of time. Miss Nine has not only been able to outshine and make her presence known in such a world, but she has done so all within four years of picking up a record. With her eclectic taste in music, ranging from energetic grooves with plenty of vocals to a deeper, progressive sound, Miss Nine is sure to turn heads and move feet any where she performs.

Kristin Schrot began her career, not as a deejay, but as a model. At 16, she made it to the finals of one of the largest modeling pageants in Germany, and soon after secured a worldwide contract with Elite Model Management. Longing for more, her passion for music led Kristin to move to Amsterdam where she dubbed herself Miss Nine and began pursuing a career in the electronic industry.

Only a few months after touching the decks for the first time, she became a resident DJ at the locally legendary Motion parties where she evolved as an artist and deejay while playing alongside masters such as John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, and James Zabiela. In 2003 she began touring abroad and even made an appearance as the youngest artist at the 10th edition of Dance Valley.

Lyrics Of The Week: Alone With You

Coastline feat. Madelin Zero - Alone With You (Lyrics)
Image: Madelin Zero

Baby I'm dizzy
won't you stop the world from spinning
I just want to be alone with you

It seems we go around and around
in a fast-paced world all sirens and shouts

when I just want to be
alone with you

and I don't need a fortune teller to tell me the future
I don't need a fortune teller
to tell me what I have to lose

I just want to be alone with you.

Tiff Lacey:

I thought I would keep you all up to date on what to expect from Tiff Lacey this year.

I'm sure you have all heard of Tiff Lacey so there is no need to do an introduction.

It looks like it's going to be a great year for singer/songwriter Tiff Lacey. I'm excited to hear about all her upcoming releases to come this year. There's even news of a solo album from Tiff.

In my opinion Tiff Lacey has the most beautiful voice within Trance and I'm sure others of you would agree.

So far since the beginning of January Tiff has already wrote 10 brand new songs. Also before Christmas she wrote a few songs for ATB. Which I expect there for his brand new album to be released Spring 2009. How exciting! I'm also aware vocalist Aruna shall be featuring on his new album.

Tiff Lacey is currently in the process of creating her solo album. I shall keep you up to date when I hear more news of this.

Nadia Ali - Love Story

Nadia Ali has an upcoming single to be released soon this year. Following her debut single 'Crash & Burn'. The new single is called 'Love Story'.

I've just checked out a sample of the track and wow it really is beautiful. The vocals and lyrics are perfect.

'Love Story' is also going to be remixed. So far there's been a remix by Andy Moor.

Andy Moor has now finished his remix of Nadia Ali - Love Story, but not being content with providing 1 remix, he has produced 3! Along with the vocal remix, Andy has also provided a Dub, and an Ecodub!

Following on from his recent Ecomixes, this Ecodub used very little electricity to produce in the studio due to Andy simply muting out the vocals.

Artist Of The Week:

Loverush UK!

Loverush UK! consists of UK producers Kinky Roland and Mark Loverush.

They are both rapidly becoming one of the most exciting pop/dance acts to emerge from the UK.

In 2005 Mark Loverush unleashed his epic sinister smash ‘Perfect Honey’ featuring Marc Almond (Soft Cell) on vocals which was snapped up by Paul Oakenfold’s legendary Perfecto imprint, the single reached Number 6 in the Music Week Club Chart and it was that same year Mark was introduced to Kinky Roland. Both the boys wanted to create something magical together and after months locked away in the studio the boys began creating their debut album ‘Plethora’.

In 2007 they unleashed the epic ‘You’re Not The One’ featuring the legendary Boy George on vocals. The single was rapidly gathering a lot of attention and was evem quoted by Sirius (USA Radio) as the best thing since George’s 1999 Grammy Nominated ‘When Will You Learn’. The single went to Number 9 in the UK Music Week Club Chart.

The boys follow up single ‘Mystery To Me’ featured yet another iconic figure , the voice behind 1990’s girl group Shakespear Sister (who unleashed the massive international Number 1 hit 'Stay', Marcella Detroit, this followed the success of the previous two singles reaching Number 14 and gave Loverush UK! their third Music Week Club Chart hit.

So how do they follow up these three amazing singles?

In June 2007 ‘Different World' was the fourth single under Loverush UK! the driving euphoric anthem featured none other than Shelley Harland, to many known for the massive Ferry Corsten smash ‘Holding On’ and the voice on many Delerium classics. The single gained much respect and shot to Number 7 in the Music Week Club Chart as well as receiving a plethora of support including at the time the World’s Number One DJ Paul Van Dyk. Not only did Paul support the single heavily on his Fritz.De German Radio show but even dropped the Mandy Reid Remix on his 'In Between' album tour. In August of that year the fifth single was unleashed 'Loverush' and featured no other than the trance diva herself Kirsty Hawkshaw (of Delerium, Tiesto and of course Opus 3 fame). The euphoric smash really blew up with the big boys especially with the Sam Ho Remake who really injected this into an Above & Beyond style hybrid. The single went flying into the Top 10 of the Music Week Club Chart where it stayed at Number 9 for two weeks and gave the boys their fifth Music Week chart anthem.

After listening back on 'Different World' the boys wanted to re-release, the breath taking anthem and after being locked away in the studio for a week, Kinky Roland turned 'Different World' into a monster piano, electro dance-floor smash. It was then the boys decided to give 'Different World' a new lease of life, a brand new package of reworks was created and a video was made. Not only did this single give the boys another Top 10 smash in the Music Week Club Chart but it crossed over into the Music Week Mainstream Chart Top 10 also, as well as having the video featured heavily on the Logo TV Network (in the USA) and featured Phillip 'PacMan' McCheeb who most will remember his out standing performance on the Fox (USA) TV Smash 'So You Think You Can Dance'. The rework paid off as the single was voted Number 31 of the best records of the year in the Music Week Annual Club Chart.

In December 2007 Mark & Kinky unleashed the vocal monster 'Deeper' written by Andrea Britton (of DT8 Project and Sunfreekz fame). The single gave the boys their 6th Top 10 Music Week Club Chart anthem (Reaching Number 7 for two weeks running). In May 2008 the boys unleashed the debut album 'Plethora' worldwide digitally, which featured further collaborations with Zee Asha, Louise De Fraine and 'Turn On the Radio' which featured Linda Duggan on vocals and was written by Dominique 'Grace' Atkins (the voice behind the 'Not Over' Perfecto 1995 Oakenfold smash).

2008 is looking even brighter for Loverush UK! as there brand new single 'Fountains Of Youth' which features the vocals of Molly Bancroft (the voice behind recent Club Anthems such as Gabriel & Dresden's 'Tracking Treasure Down' and the recent Pete Tong's Essential New Tune Gianluca Motta's 'Not Alone' BBC Radio 1) gaining massive support not only with the big A List DJs but the commercial jocks to. If you are expecting out and out trance from the boys, then we're sorry to disappoint as 'Fountains Of Youth' is pure chilled down-tempo pop at its best and is a drastic change for both Mark and Kinky. The change certainly has paid off as 'Fountains Of Youth' reached Number 10 in the UK Buzz Chart and has stayed at Number 2 for two weeks in the Music Week Upfront Club Chart and is still riding high in the Top 10 after a staggering 9 weeks.

2009 is already proving to be a promising year ahead as they are about to embark on there massive new single 5 Reasons with Sylvia Tosun and currently working on brand new material with Carla Werner, Tiff Lacey, Andrea Britton, Lee Thomas, Anji Bee, Molly Bancroft, Sapphirecut, Alex Mei and currently in talks with Rosie Gains of 'Closer Than Close' fame and Emma Hewitt the voice behind the Chris Lake smash 'Carry Me Away', all to be featured on Kinky and Mark's second artist album due for release in Spring 2009.

Vocalist Of The Week:

Shelley Harland

Harland's musical career began in a tiny Brooklyn apartment where her only companions were a four track recorder, a beaten up acoustic guitar and cockroaches. Never trained on an instrument and with a desire to create the songs that persistently played in her head she taught herself composition by ear.

Her writing talents, vocals and programming skills were soon recognized and lead to many collaborations including John Cale (velvet underground), Ferry Corsten, Guru (jazzmatazz), Junkie XL, and Delerium.

To discover more on Harland's electronic work and her collaborations visit the Harland Myspace. Currently Harland performs under her full name "Shelley Harland" click here for her Shelley Myspace and website.

******************************************************************
Shelley Harland’s debut single “Wonder” through Albert Music/ SonyBMG is the perfect introduction to the singer-songwriter and producer who commutes between Sydney, New York and London.
******************************************************************
This tasteful, emotive slice of pop displays her gorgeous voice and ability to create a moody yet very intimate ambience. “Wonder” is taken from Shelley’s major label debut album “Red Leaf” due out in 2009. The theme of sentiment on “Wonder” is something Shelley relates to. Her own journey began in London where she was born to a carpenter father and a nurse mother. “We were a typical Cockney working class family,” she says. “There were no musical aspirations. But there’d be singalongs and dance routines at family get-togethers.”

************************************************************
Shelley developed her talent for songwriting and programming living in New York - experimenting with music in her bedroom each evening and her amazing voice has inspired collaborations with Guru from Jazzmatazz, Junkie XL, Josh Abraham and Velvet Undergrounds John Cale — and other people whom she still works with.
******************************************************************
In between her overseas collaborations, she made “Red Leaf” with producer David Skeet. While absorbing the sounds and moods of her environment, Shelley’s Sydney network soon expanded to include Tim Powles of The Church who fell immediately for her music and was soon volunteering to drum on the album recordings. “Red Leaf” is being mixed in London by Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Pixies, Radiohead) and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road studios. A big deal for a beautiful record that began on a $500 piano in Shelley’s living room.

*******************************************************************
“The music I made changed when I moved to Australia,” Shelley reckons. “I wasn’t listening to anything different. My tastes have always been about The Beatles, Motown, The Carpenters, Bjork, Portishead and Fleetwood Mac. But while New York made me feel electric, Sydney was so laid back and beautiful that my music took on that flavour.”

*******************************************************************
The buzz surrounding these initial tracks soon gained her attention and an eventual recording deal with Albert Music, home of AC/DC. Shelley Harland is the first solo female artist to sign to Albert Music in over a decade - a sure sign that the legendary label have spotted something unique and powerful in Shelley’s music.

Lyrics Of The Week:

Jonas Steur feat. Jennifer Rene - Fall To Pieces (Lyrics)

Needing a reason for being stuck in this seemingly
Demeaning whirlwind of ride with you
Oh yeah I do
Longer then faster I try to decide what you're after
A disaster, is that what you put me through?
Oh yeah you do

I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone
So don't come to me and beg to plead...
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone

You're about to say...

Searching for truth in this twisted environment
I can't believe that I once was inspired by you
But I'll be ok
Poetry means nothing when you love me and leave
You can disappear one day then wear your heart on your sleeve
Do you know what I'm worth?
What do you see?

I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be goneSo don't come to me and beg to plead...
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone

You're about to say...
Hmm... I don't wanna know, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna fall to pieces
I don't wanna fall at all so
You're about to say...
Hmm... I don't wanna know, I don't wanna know
I don't wanna fall to pieces
I don't wanna fall at all so
Go... away...
Just go...

I don't wanna fall anymore
I don't wanna fall anymore
You're about to say...
I don't wanna know
I don't wanna know
